This course provides a solid foundation to managing common breast problems in clinical practice. The course provides information on the normal breast, breast lumps, and other common breast changes.

To upskill Health Professionals with the latest evidence-based information in:

  • Normal breast anatomy and physiology
  • The clinician’s role in the management of new breast changes and breast screening
  • The management of common breast problems in community practice

Course content

The course consists of 3 modules:

    • Module 1 – What is Normal?

      • Mastalgia
      • BreastScreen & Breast cancer statistics
      • Assessing the family risk of breast cancer
      • Modifiable risk factors

    • Module 3 – Other Breast Changes

      • Pathological Nipple Discharge
      • Lactational Mastitis
      • Non-lactational Mastitis, Inflammatory Breast cancer, Mammary Duct Ectasia & Skin Dimpling
      • Nipple Retraction
      • Paget’s Disease of the Nipple
      • Ulceration

Eligibility

Nursing Qualifications are desirable.

General Practice Accreditation and Credit Points

On successful completion of the course, participants will be awarded a statement listing the modules and anticipated time for completion of the modules. This statement can be used for submission to obtain Professional Development or Continuing Education points to the relevant organisation.

Learning objectives

On completion of this course the participant will:

  • Have a clear understanding of the normal breast.
  • Understand the BreastScreen program and the clinician’s role in breast screening.
  • Be confident in the investigation pathway of a new breast change.
  • Understand the management of common breast problems in community practice.
  • Have a clear understanding of the risk factors for breast cancer and be able to counsel women on their individual risk.
