Who should register?
Clinicians who will assist in the insertion of intrauterine devices (IUDs).
This may include, but is not limited to, general practice registered nurses and enrolled nurses, rural and remote nurses, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health practitioners (with clinical responsibilities).
Course overview
This course aims to provide comprehensive information to the healthcare professional assisting in the insertion of an intrauterine device (IUD). It encompasses the role, equipment required, emergency considerations, client comfort, and key points for client education pre- and post-procedure. An overview of IUDs and their context of use within Australia is provided as a foundation to further support the client through their IUD journey.
This course is not a prerequisite or pathway to IUD insertion training. If you are looking at becoming an IUD inserter, please register your interest here (please note we offer IUD insertion training at various locations).
This course consists of 4 modules. There are short quizzes to check your knowledge and understanding within each module.
Module 1: Understanding IUDs
- IUDs in the context of LARCs
- Different IUDs available in Australia
Module 2: Client education and procedural preparation
- Pre-procedure client preparation and education
- Comfort measures
Module 3: IUD insertion and removal
- Equipment required for an IUD insertion
- Clinical videos of the insertion procedure
- Client management during and after the procedure
Module 4: Managing problems
- Post-procedure responsibilities and client education
- Emergency considerations and management
Course outcomes
On completion of this course participants will receive a Statement of Completion in Assisting IUD Insertion for Healthcare Professionals.
Eligibility
Current AHPRA registration as a healthcare professional
CPD information
On successful completion of this course, participants will be awarded a Statement of Completion. This statement can be used to support a participant’s annual declaration of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours as part of their registration requirements.
