Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting: Culturally Responsive Practice for GPs

Course overview
This course is developed to provide information on what health professionals need to know about FGM/C care and the cultural considerations during clinical consultations.
Participants will engage with updated information on current international and state FGM/C guidelines, diagnostic aides and resource materials for clients affected by FGM/C.
Primarily for General Practitioners, this course is also helpful for midwives, nurses and other health professionals working in clinical, health education or health promotion settings.
This course has been developed in collaboration with clinicians using evidence-based research by Culturally Responsive Health at True Relationships and Reproductive Health with funding from Queensland Health. This course has been co-developed with the Refugee Health Network of Queensland; Rani Pramesti, Founder of Social Design Asia; community consultants including Swaatha Hussein Haji and Sara Yousif, True’s Clinical Education Unit, and reviewed by the Culturally Responsive Health Advisory Group, Multicultural Centre for Women’s Health and Professor Angela Dawson.
Learning outcomes
- 1. Gain and apply professional knowledge on FGM/C in the Australian context, including current clinical practice guidelines and mandatory reporting requirements.
- 2. Develop and evaluate culturally sensitive communication skills to enhance the patient-doctor relationship for satisfactory FGM/C consultations.
- 3 Identify and manage the care of individuals affected by FGM/C, including recognising cases, managing complications, and referring to appropriate support services.

This course will be submitted to the RACGP CPD Program as an Educational Accredited Activity by December 2024: 4 hours.
