Course overview

Clinicians are required to be at a high level of training and experience to undertake IUD insertion training. At True, we believe IUD insertion is a procedure at the highest proficiency level of women’s health clinical practice.

This training consists of a 4 hour online, self-paced, theory component covering the following topics:

  • Different IUDs available in Australia
  • Medical eligibility criteria (MEC) for IUDs
  • Counselling patients on effectiveness, mode of action, advantages, disadvantages, and risks of IUDs
  • Appropriate investigations and timing for insertion
  • Insertion and removal techniques for different IUDs

The clinical attachment consists of 2 sessions, with each session approximately 4 hours in duration. The clinical session will commence with simulated training using a pelvic model, then 1 observed insertion, followed by 6-8 insertions (minimum of 6) under direct supervision. Training is recorded in a clinical portfolio.

Course outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be awarded a Statement of Completion for IUD insertion training.

After completion of the course, it is recommended you perform at least 10 insertions each year to maintain your competence in this skill.

It is expected you will exercise due clinical judgement to ensure all procedures are performed within your scope of practice.

FAQ

1. Is it possible to transfer to another clinic location for the clinical training once my application has been approved?

Each of the True clinics can only accommodate a limited number of training placements per year. True is unable to transfer your clinical training location.

2. Is it possible to change my training dates after I have registered?

Due to the high demand of our IUD insertion training course, the limitations of individual True clinics and the number of IUD trainers, it is generally not possible to change dates once you have registered and confirmed dates. True does understand that from time to time, situations may arise that prevent you from attending the dates you have registered for and the clinical education team will work with you to try reschedule where possible but this will incur a fee. If you need to reschedule your training dates, applications should be made in writing to ceu@true.org.au and addressed to the Manager, Clinical Education Unit.

3. Is the FPAA course a prerequisite for IUD insertion training?

No. However, to be eligible for IUD insertion training you must have extensive experience in contraceptive counselling, women’s health, and gynaecology. Undertaking the FPAA course may help to consolidate this experience, but it is not a mandatory requirement.

4. I really want training and experience inserting copper IUDs. Will this happen during the clinical attachment?

You will be given experience with copper IUDs. At the start of the training, you will practice a copper IUD insertion on a model*. True endeavour to have at least one copper IUD insertion during the training session; however, this cannot be guaranteed.

*Copper IUDs supplied by Medical Industries Australia

5. I work with an experienced IUD inserter in my practice. Can they provide me with clinical supervision and training in my workplace, so I don’t have to attend a True clinic?

You may undertake external supervision; however, to achieve a Statement of Completion for training, all training must be completed with a True trainer.

6. What happens if I require an extra training session?

It is at the discretion of your True trainer if you require extra training, and this will incur an extra fee of $550.

7. May I request extra training sessions?

Due to limitations in training places, True are unable to provide extra sessions if competence is achieved within the designated time.

8. Does the clinical attachment cover initial IUD consultations and follow up appointments?

IUD consultations and follow up is covered in the online theory component. Questions may be directed to the True trainer during the clinical attachment or to the Clinical Education Unit.

9. How long do I have access to the online pre-reading?

You have 12 months from the date of acceptance to access the online course content. This is to ensure that you are accessing the most up-to-date version of this content, which is routinely reviewed and updated as required.

10. Cancellation fees

  • If cancelling more than 28 days prior to your confirmed clinical placement session, you will be refunded 85% of the original invoice amount.
  • If cancelling 8-27 days prior confirmed clinical placement session, you will receive a 50% refund
  • No refund will be issued if you cancel 7 days or less before your placement.

11. Exceptional circumstances/ sickness

Refunds or rescheduling training dates will be considered in cases of exceptional circumstances and/or sickness. Any request for special consideration must be made in writing to ceu@true.org.au and addressed to the Manager, Clinical Education Unit.

12. Cancellation, postponement, or re-scheduling of training

True reserves the right to cancel, postpone or reschedule training due to low enrolments or unforeseen circumstances. True will provide a full refund to the training participant within 30 days. In the case of True cancelling training, True will contact registered participants and schedule new dates where possible. This will not incur additional fees.

True reserves the right to change training dates, content or trainers at its discretion.
