Contraceptive Implant (Implanon NXT®) Insertion & Removal Training

This interactive course aims to provide theoretical and simulated training in the insertion and removal of the contraceptive implant, Implanon NXT®, and provide product knowledge and patient counselling. The course consists of 2 hours of online theory and 1.5 hours of face-to-face simulation practice.

Who should register?

General practitioners, GP registrars, international medical graduates, registered nurses, registered midwives, or nurse practitioners


Eligibility

  • Current AHPRA registration
  • Prior experience in local anaesthetic administration
  • Up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination status in line with current government guidelines
  • For nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and registered midwives: must ensure Implanon NXT® insertion and removal is within scope of practice and have Professional Indemnity Insurance to cover for Implanon NXT® insertion and removal

Prerequisites

All registered participants must:

  • Complete online theory course (approx. 2.5 hours duration) before attending the simulation practice

Course overview

This interactive training session includes self paced online learning which must be completed prior to the face-to-face clinical simulation. The following topic are covered in this course:

  • Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARC) Composition and mechanism of action
  • Efficacy Side effects, including bleeding patterns and guidance of management
  • Patient suitability, contraindications, and medication interactions
  • Patient consent
  • Timing of initiation of contraception
  • Insertion procedure, including anatomical considerations
  • Removal procedure
  • Reinsertion procedure
  • Post-procedure patient advice
  • Advice for complex implants, such as deeply inserted implants

 

Implanon NXT® insertion and removal simulated practice on model arms will occur under supervision in small groups by an experienced Implanon NXT® clinical trainer. Please register for a session to attend and complete your simulation practice with the trainer.

For Doctors

Assessment:

Participants must complete a short, online quiz with 100% pass mark required. The course includes feedback from an Implanon NXT® clinical educator on simulation procedure technique but does not include a formal competency assessment.

Course outcomes:

Participants will receive a Statement of Attendance for Contraceptive Implant (Implanon NXT®) Insertion & Removal Training. The statement may be used as evidence of attendance of training.


For Nurses and Midwives

Assessment:

Participants must complete a short, online quiz with 100% pass mark required. The course includes feedback from an Implanon NXT® clinical educator on simulation procedure technique but does not include a formal competency assessment.

Course outcomes:

Participants will receive a Statement of Attendance for Contraceptive Implant (Implanon NXT®) Insertion & Removal Training. The Statement may be used as evidence of attendance of training. True’s Implanon NXT® insertion and removal training does not confer competency.

True strongly recommends that nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and registered midwives perform Implanon NXT® insertion and removal under appropriate supervision in their workplaces before commencing independent practice.

Other health professionals can use the Statement of Attendance to support their annual declaration of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours as part of their registration requirements.


FAQ

  1. Do I need to have prior experience with local anaesthetic administration? Yes. Training in local anaesthetic (LA) administration is not covered in our course. If you are a health professional, we advise discussing with your employer appropriate training in LA use. We are unable to assist in the clinical component of this.
